Keynote Speech - How We Learn and Why ePortfolios Are Essential in Higher Education

Why is there so much interest in ePortfolios across higher education today?  The reasons are actually quite compelling and often grounded in what we know about learning.  This keynote presentation will explore answers to this overarching question by first considering what we empirically know about human cognition and how people learn.  From this foundation, we will consider the practices and pedagogies that employ ePortfolios and connect those practices to what we know about learning.  We will also explore the range of ways in which ePortfolios are being using in higher education, including teaching and learning, assessment, advising, and career development.  Example ePortfolios from each area will be shared.  The keynote will conclude with a brief summary of the most recent findings from the ePortfolio scholarship and recommendations will be provided regarding how that information should inform future ePortfolio practices.
