Biography:
Nnenna Onyima holds a BA from Imo State University, Nigeria and a Masters Degree from the University of Virginia. Through a gendered prism, she studies the representation of spirits in African literature and film. Before enrolling at UVA’s French graduate studies program, Nnenna taught French at the Institut Français du Nigeria and at private schools in Nigeria. Her work interrogates the lived experiences of embodied spirits in precolonial, colonial, and postcolonial sub-Saharan African narratives. Her research interests focus on Black feminist thought, African feminism, women, gender, and sexuality studies as well as African queer studies.
