MA Program

The Master's degree (usually completed in one and a half to two academic years) is suitable either as a first professional degree or as a preparation for further graduate work. It is a stand-alone degree and does not lead to the UVA doctoral program in French.

The program requirements consist of ten graduate-level courses, at least nine of which are completed in the French Department, and a final, comprehensive exam.

Students with a strong background in teaching and who intend to pursue a teaching career may apply to the pedagogy MA.  This program provides additional training and experience in teaching undergraduate-level French.

Further details are available in the Graduate Handbook

Graduates of our MA program have gone on to pursue administrative academic careers as well as careers in secondary education, law, and business. Our graduates include an editor at the National Gallery of Art, a humanitarian aid worker in the Congo, the French Desk Chief of the United States Military Academy’s Department of Foreign Languages, and a counterterrorism analyst.
